Historical Archaeology at the Green Tree Tavern

Field School May 12 to June 20, 2008

Project Description: The Green Tree Tavern was built c. 1790 by Nicolas Janis, a wealthy French-Canadian settler, who also lived in the building with his family. In 1833, a German immigrant named Mathias Ziegler purchased the property.  He operated a tobacco business out of the building, which also served as a residences for his family. Ziegler descendants lived in the house until 1938.

The 2008 excavations will be conducted in several areas of the site: an outbuilding behind the house that was partially revealed in 2006 and 2007; the entrance to the tavern/tobacco shop; and the portion of the building that served as a residence.

Students will learn the techniques of excavation, mapping, and record-keeping. no prior experiences is necessary. in addition to the fieldwork, several lectures by visiting archaeologists and historians are planned. Field trips to nearby historical and archaeological sites are included as part of the course. 

   
Field School Location: The town of Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, is located on the Mississippi River about 60 miles south of St. Louis. It contains one of the best examples of a French colonial landscape in North America, with more houses of French vertical log construction still standing than anywhere else in the country.
 

 

Room and Board: Students will be housed at the Hotel Ste. Genevieve, Located in the Historic downtown area.  For the 6-week field school session, lunches will be provided for boarding students Monday through Friday.
