Arkansas Archeological Survey

Station Research Assistant

Where?-  The Arkansas Archeological Survey’s UAM Research Station, based at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, with a research territory covering the seven southeastern most counties in Arkansas, involving portions of the Lower Mississippi Valley, Lower Arkansas Valley, and Ouachita Valley. This is basically a rural area with a few small towns; the eastern third is mainly “Delta” farmlands, and the western two-thirds, mostly piney woods and some pastures; wetland patches all over.

When? - May 2008

Who & What? – We are looking for a sharp, energetic, enthusiastic person with a completed BA (plus some field experience) or Ma in Anthropology with strong emphasis in Archeology. Field & data-recording & lab skills required.  Should have some knowledge of the prehistory of the LMV and western portion of the SE, and be eager to learn more. Might be called on to teach portions of basic Anth/ Arch classes.

            The basic job is assisting a veteran regional Station archeologist with various aspects of research.  (Beyond that, possible future thesis or dissertation topics abound, and might be taken along after leaving this position for grad school.) some work on weekends and at odd hours (w/ “comp time” off).

            There will be a good amount of basic field work (site surveys & mapping, limited testing), related lab work, visits to sites with regional amateurs and collectors, visiting their homes and documenting their collections.  Also, there will be some work with UAM Station artifact collections.

            Should be a self-started with proven ability to work solo, or with few helpers, in remote locations.  Should have an  open, friendly, good-humored personality, and enjoy working with the public in a generally Southern-rural cultural setting, in the tradition of the Survey’s long-established “public archeology” programs.  Should be able to communicate with groups form grammar-schoolers to civic/service clubs, as well as academics.

            Computer proficiency is necessary, especially for work with maps and other graphics, and data bases.

Salary? $24,000 with great benefits that include: 4 weeks annual leave, sick leave, medical, and retirement.
